Water garden ideas come in different forms such as water fountains, falls, streams, curtains, pools and ponds. All you have to do is decide what type of water feature you like among the five. But before we define, distinguish and illustrate each of these water features, we have to discuss the purpose and history of water features. Why do we build water features in our yards and gardens?

First and foremost, water features are aesthetic landscaping features that we add on our property to improve and beautify the yard, make it good looking and pleasing to the eye. While garden features such as water fountains which are part of extensive landscaping will increase the value of your home in affluent/high class locations, the same cannot be said about water features in middle class and low-income areas, but of course you might be able to squeeze at most $2700 out of your water feature addition, which is an insignificant amount that barely increases the value of your home in terms of real estate valuation.

History of Water Features

According to archaeological discoveries, water features such as fountains were used between 2000 and 3000 B.C. by the early Sumerian civilization in the Mesopotamian  cities of Tello and Mari. While the fountain discovered in Tello was a basic basin carved out of stone and dating back to 3000 B.C. , the fountain discovered in Mari (dating back to 2000 B.C.) is the oldest known true water fountain sculptured into a female figure holding a base in her hands, with water spouting from the basin. The stone fountain sculpture was an aesthetic piece which also had religious significance, symbolizing a Sumerian goddess and was probably functional as well, serving as a water source for drinking.

Water features existed in many other ancient civilizations such as the Egyptian, Chinese, Indus Valley and Middle Eastern cultures, including the Aztec-Maya Inca civilizations. Early fountains were used for supplying water for domestic uses (e.g. drinking and bathing), built on the output ends of water channels and functioning as valve-less taps, spouting out water at high or low pressure. Ancient cultures made use of gradient (slope) to channel water from a higher point to a lower point by the action of gravity. Water from natural springs and reservoirs was channelled to manmade fountains in cities and human settlements. If the water source was at a lower altitude than the city as in the case of the Nile River in ancient Egypt, water was lifted from the source using a shaduf and dumped into manmade canals or ditches.

Between 3000 BC and 1450 BC, the Minoan civilization in Crete, Greece flourished alongside other civilizations of that era in the Bronze Age. They dug and built square shaped water fountains with a pebble-stone base on top of natural artesian springs. Water would sip up through the base, filling the square well/cistern made of limestone block walls. Steps led down to the well and water would be collected using vessels. These type of fountain also known as a Tykte or Minoan fountains were discovered in the ruins of the Knossos Palace and Zakro Palace in Caravanserai. The Zakro Palace fountain was built between 1700 and 1500 BC.

Although fountains were built for functional purposes (i.e. water supply) in the Bronze Age and Ancient Era, they also had religious significance in most cases, and a bit of decoration. However, as the ancient era came to an end, succeeding civilizations such as the Hellenistic Greeks and Romans integrated more decorative design in their water features to symbolize power and victories. By 1901, fountains were beginning to lose their functional purpose with the invention of indoor taps and cold water plumbing making use of iron tubing. Once domestic cold water plumbing was installed on a large scale in towns and cities, fountains ceased being sources of water and they were made purely for decorative purposes.

Types of Water Features

Water Fountain – This is a water feature that mimics a natural spring, with water coming out from a horizontal surface, spout or opening at high or low pressure. High pressure fountains will generate higher jets and wider sprays of water, as well as energetic splashes and cascades. Low pressure fountains will result in shorter plumes of water, little to no sprays  as well as gentle cascades and bubbling. A natural spring or fountain is powered by an artesian aquifer whereby underground water is confined between impermeable rocks at a high pressure.

Waterfalls – This is a water feature that mimics a natural waterfall. Think of one of the seven wonders of the world – the Victorial Falls in Zimbabwe, or just nearby in the United States, the Niagara Falls. A waterfall is the result of a river or large mass of water moving and falling over a rocky gorge or cliff.

Stream – This is a water feature that mimics a natural stream or river. To make a stream, you have to keep the water flowing from one direction to the other. It cannot be called a stream if the water is stagnant.

Water Curtain – The concept might look similar to a waterfall but there is a big difference. A water curtain is more of an attempt to mimic the rainfall effect.  In a garden water curtain, the water is pumped through an overhead horizontal pipe or aqueduct which has perforated drain holes underneath. Running water will drain through the holes creating an amazing “rainfall” curtain that adds a decorative effect inside your garden.

Pond – This is a popular water feature in many home gardens. All you have to decide is what kind of pond you want. There are Koi ponds, reflective ponds, plant ponds and so on. A pond is a small body of stagnant water that is used for decorative purposes in many gardens. A natural pond found in the wild has aquatic plants, creatures , organisms and a bed/floor called the benthic zone made up of sediment (sand, rock, coral and mud). A home garden pond should imitate this structure and composition. Often, the bed is made up of a butyl liner between the top and bottom layers of sand. Heavy soil is placed on top of the sand bed and covered with gravel to prevent hydraulic soil erosion. Plants are grown. Pebbles are placed on the shelf and slope, creating a natural habitat that for pond fish and other organisms.

Pool – A pool is not a pond if you thought so. While a pond is designed to support an aquatic habitat (water plants and creatures), a pool is both a leisure and decorative facility built for swimming, wading, cooling off and other summer activities, but some pools are built only for decorative purposes and you are not allowed to enter the pool, for example reflecting pools are shallow and situated in public spaces solely for aesthetic purposes. Aesthetic garden pools are usually enhanced with water fountains and falls.

Rainforest – It’s quite challenging to build a rainforest in your garden as you need to gather a variety of tropical plants and grow them in a suitable climate that you might not have in your location or region. A tropical rainforest has ferns, moss, lianas, undergrowth, climbing plants, grass, wild flowers and canopy trees, but it’s all up to you what you can include – for example you might add palm trees and bamboos if you like. The goal is to achieve the looks. Water features mentioned above will be a great addition to the flora in your rainforest garden.

On closer view, the turquoise water illusion disappears, being replaced by colourless/crystal clear transparent waters which show the pool floor in detail. Small blue and white tiles were laid in a straight stack bond inside pool. The squeaky clean and neat courtyard containing the pool can be seen in its elegance with majestic palm trees lining up the sidewalks to paint a perfect picture of a modern paradise.

A closer view of the manicured lawn field and side pools at Baan Yamu Residences. The neat lawn is bounded by a flat concrete edge perimeter, which separates the narrow pool and the lawn. Next to the narrow pool is a cast-on-site concrete walkway. Precast concrete bridge panels to obtain access to the lawn are installed at suitable intervals along the pool strip. The gap between the walkway slab and planters was filled with stones. Tall palm trees grace the sidewalks next to the villas. Strappy plants are contained within concrete planters. The scene looks like a piece of architectural green paradise. Perfect!

The villa front patios are lined with tall palm trees. Brown rusting landscaping pots are lined up at suitable spacing along the narrow side pool. This looks like an ideal mixed-use community project to live in – a quiet and relaxing environment with huge open spaces.
