Dimension Sheet for Engineers and Contractors – A4 Paper with Margins and No Feint.

The general measurement sheet used by building contractors and project engineers is quite different from the standard dimension paper used by quantity surveyors. You can obtain this paper at a few selected stores that are still supplying it. The takeoff sheet is available in A4 size, but it can be wider since it contains more columns than the standard dimension sheet. This sheet has 8 columns while the standard sheet has 5 or fewer columns. A contractor or project engineer can choose between two types of sheets – ruled paper with feint and margins or blank paper with margins and no feint.

Why do people in the construction and estimating business use this type of sheet and what are its advantages? The general measurement sheet has a much simpler layout than the professional quantity surveying takeoff sheet. Just by looking at the columns, you can see what the columns are used for and where dimensions for length, width ,depth and enumerated items should be entered. There is also a column for Total Quantities. This logical layout is easy to understand for non-quantity surveyors who are not familiar with the standard layout and method of entering quantities on a traditional dimension paper.

We have already implied that one advantage of the contractor/engineer’s takeoff sheet is its simplicity, but there are more advantages. One thing you would have quickly realized is that this sheet looks similar to the digital dimension sheet (DimensionX) found on takeoff software such as CostX, WinQS and QSPlus. The way you enter dimensions on these computer takeoff programs is the way you should enter dimensions on the measurement paper. As you will realize, the dimension columns on this paper will play a huge role in offloading  waste calculations from the description column. However, you can still use the description column to lay out some waste calculations which cannot be accommodated on the dimensions space.

There are two main types of measurement sheets – a sheet with an extra column for Annotations and Totals and a sheet with no Annotations column.

Layout of the Contractor/Engineer’s Measurement Sheet:

The dimension sheet has 8 columns on A4 paper. It also includes a header form for filling in the project details, estimator’s name, date and page number.

Second column – Description column (For item descriptions and waste calculations)

Third column – Timesing column also called the Number column (for entering multiplication factors and enumerated items)

Fourth column – Length column (Dimension column for Length)

Fifth column – Width column (Dimension column for Width)

Sixth column – Height column (Dimension column for Height or Depth)

Seventh column – Quantity column also called the Summation column

Eight column – Annotations/Total column (For entering the item total quantity as well as annotations).
